What is Eye Donation?

Eye donation is the voluntary donation of the cornea after death. The cornea is the transparent front layer of the eye that focuses light. If it becomes damaged due to disease, infection, injury, or certain inherited conditions, vision may be significantly affected.

A healthy donated cornea can help restore vision through corneal transplantation.

Who Can Donate?

Most people can pledge their eyes. You can usually donate even if you:

  • Any age

The final suitability of the donated corneal tissue is determined by the Eye Bank after donation.

What Should the Family Do?

If a person who has pledged their eyes passes away:

Stay calm.

Keep the eyelids gently closed.

Switch off any fan directly above the face.

Place a clean pillow beneath the head if possible.

Keep the death certificate or medical records ready if available.

Corneal retrieval should ideally be performed within 6 hours after death.
